How would I go about building a distance sensor and having it do a calculation before displaying the distance?
I want to be able to build a distance sensor for no longer than 9 inches that will read the distance, and divide it buy the width of the objects that is changing position, so if i had 10 balls lined up, each ball would have a diameter of x, and the distance read would be d. If i remove the first ball, i want to have the sensor out put the (d/x) so that it will display the number of balls that have been taken away. How would i go about building a sensor to do this, and having it output to a small chip, which will be aligned with a chip reader that will send the display to a small backlit LCD screen like on a calculator.
Thank you so much to whoever can help! I know it's not going to be easy, but I haven't been able to get any help on this yet.
Also, if you have any suggestions for parts to get this, it'll help.
Im not sure how much you wanna spend. The way Id do it (fairly simple method) is to get a programmable microprocessor. Id recommend an Arduino as its the easiest to use. Buy the cheapest one for about $40. Then youd need to get a distance sensor. A photoelectric one that uses light as the way of measuring is the cheapest and easiest. You would also need an LCD screen display with the necessary integrated chip (i have never used one before but I know they are available and probably not that expensive).
Then you be able to plug in the sensor into the microprocessor and receive the distance (the distance will be given in bits 0-1023, so youd have to calibrate it so youd be able to determine how many bits would correspond to the diameter of the balls). You can then easily make any calculations in the microprocessor code and output that value to the LCD screen.
To learn more Id suggest checking out the Arduino website and youtube arduino tutorials. Itll get you started on how to do this.
