Modern Display Technology Has Come A Long Way Lately
For anyone who has plopped themselves down in front of the latest liquid crystal display TV, the quality of the picture being displayed can truly be astounding. It's certainly the case that modern display technology has come a long way lately, especially when it comes to extremely tiny LCD screens that can be found, for example, in certain expensive automobiles or even in modern aircraft. CRT tubes and big, fat televisions have definitely left the scene, it seems.
As an example, look around and take note of the flat-panel LCD TV that's probably occupying a place of pride in the home. This TV has been improved over the last few years through use of LED backlight technology that makes use of light emitting diodes to improve the brightness and clarity of the TVs display screen. The LEDs have replaced more traditional fluorescent tubes that are still used to light many of these TVs, though it may not be for long.
The use of light emitting diodes as a way of sharpening and brightening a flat-panel liquid crystal display TV is just one example of how innovation always finds a way to improve a consumer's life. The LEDs in this case run around the edge of the TV display screen -- hidden by what is called a television bezel -- and really contribute to the brightness, color and clarity of the picture displayed by the TV.
This actually isn't the only innovation that has begun to benefit display screens of all sizes, by the way. Currently, some really small custom LCD screens have been produced that are being used in a variety of ways, including for data display modules such as can be found in an aircraft or even more expensive automobiles. They cost less than 100 bucks and can really add not only good looks but also are a definite improvement over analog gauges.
Considering that they also use far less energy, on average, than older digital or analog gauges, it's no wonder that custom liquid crystal display screens have made their way into aircraft cockpits or even personal automobiles and the like. This isn't to mention how useful they've become in medical equipment applications as well as all manner of measuring tasks.
A relative to the custom liquid crystal display module is the graphic LCD unit. It interfaces extremely easily with most computers through use of a common USB 2.0 port or through an older style serial port connection. Just about all of them can be easily programmed to display a wide variety of data and information and normally cost somewhere around $100 for a unit that can carry out a great deal of functions.
When it comes to innovation, it seems that some of the best work is being done in taking liquid crystal display technology -- which actually has been around for decades -- and improving it by leaps and bounds. The first big step for the LCD, when it came to consumer applications, was the flat-panel TV. Since then, a lot of work has gone into improving that display, and the televisions and other display technologies now available are a full order of magnitude better than units from just a few years ago.

When is big not big enough? Apparently when it's Sharp's "spectacularge"
70-inch AQUOS LCD HDTVs that were introduced earlier this year, and have now
been surpassed by a new 80-inch model the company showed off today. The LC-
80LE632U isn't an Elite branded model, but it brings all the features of its
smaller brethren including full LED backlighting, 120Hz motion processing,
built-in WiFi and access to services like Netflix and Vudu. All that is nice,
but it's standout feature is that extra viewing area, which can be yours for
$5,499 (MSRP) when it starts shipping in early October. Preorders are already
popping up for sub-$5k prices, if you need a big screen and can't go the
projection route (front or rear) this might be a good value -- check out the
