My Decking Screws Experience
I am very new to the do it yourself world and when I made a decision to build my very own deck, I needed to complete some extensive research into what decking screws were perfect for what types of environments. I would like very much to share what I found with you.
It sounded like a fairly easy task to construct myself a bit of deck overlooking the swimming pool and, in the beginning it absolutely was. The drawing up of the plans went with no hitch and I got some really good information on what wood to use and how it ought to be treated. A Few Things I didn't get told was how many different types of decking screws there are.
The first thing you need to know is that for outdoor use, stainless steel decking screws work most effectively, particularly if you live near the coast where the water content in the air is high. Stainless steel decking screws are available in various grades. Marine grade (316) is the best because it is very high in nickel and will not rust very easily. Using stainless steel decking screws is much more important if you are using a hardwood for the deck. A great many other metals will certainly react with the wood and may either rust quickly or produce satins on the lovely wood.
The next thing is: do not skimp on the cost. There is a major distinction between cheap “marine grade” decking screws and much more expensive marine decking screws. Among the risks of utilizing cheap decking screws is they strip more easily. This is especially relevant when you are using a hardwood for you deck. The density of the wood is such that a great deal of pressure is needed to have the screws to tap into the wood, a low quality screw won't withstand that sort of stress on its head and is going to inevitably strip, they may even snap off if the neck is of sufficiently low quality meaning you'll have an ugly hole in your lovely wood with a low quality piece of screw sticking out of it. If you do get the low quality screw into your wood, the force needed to get it in may have made it brittle and much more prone to break under the slightest stress.
If you're able to find them, torx screws are better still. They have a six pointed star head that is a lot more resistant to stripping than even the most top quality stainless-steel decking screws.
Also, make sure you have sufficient screws. It is a good plan to purchase no less than one third more screws than you think you will have to accommodate the inevitable stripping and breaking of screws, particularly if you are intending on utilizing a cheaper variety of screw.
So, generally speaking, it's not a good idea to be a cheap skate when it comes to buying decking screws for your hardwood deck. They will strip very easily and break under stress. They are also made of poor quality metals that will stain your wood and rust away much more quickly when compared to a good quality screw.
Problems with screws? Bearings have gone?
My girlfriend and I have a swing for our newborn baby,it has sparkling lights and mp3 player connectivity, however the compartment that the batteries go in has had the screws screwed in but there are no batteries in, and the bearings of the screws are worn away now meaning any screwdriver i try using is useless, the heads of the screws look more like Allan key shape.
Can anyone help?
Thanks guys, have managed to get the screws out a little bit but not much. Very annoying
yeaaa its very annoying, last week I had almost the same problem, it was my laptop's cd screw, well, I get the screws out with a flathead screwdrvr'' ,
sorry for all the history about my last week problem hahaha,
Just use a bigger flathead screwdriver, one that don't exceed your screw size
It was no easy road for inventor of SnapIt eyeglass repair kit (St. Petersburg Times)
**By Mark Albright, Times Staff Writer**
Monday, December 5, 2011
The curse of eyeglasses includes wrestling with tiny screws the size of ghost
ants when a hinge snaps or a lens falls out, often at the worst time and
place.
Cheap repair kits with lilliputian screwdrivers and magnifying glass are sold
widely, but often only further frustrate the sight-impaired.
Inspired by her mother jury rigging an emergency fix with an earring, first-
time inventor Nancy Tedeschi stepped up with a solution that removes much of
the mind-numbing hassle of amateur eyeglass repair.
She improved a tapered screw design dramatically enough to win her own patent.
She has sold 4 million screws to opticians in two years, and 500,000 of her
SnapIt repair kits to consumers since June. The SnapIts sell in many Walgreens
and Ace Hardware stores at $3.98 or more, a buck more than rival repair kits
